Six Ethical Approaches According to Sandel 1) Utilitarianism a) The book titles the chapter introducing utilitarianism â€Å"The Greatest Happiness Principle† and that is simply because the concept of utilitarianism according to the book is about calculating costs and benefits after all. In simpler terms, what creates more happiness and benefits the majority of the people. Sandel introduces Bentham’s approach to this as quoted on page 34 as â€Å"maximizing utility’’ and â€Å"maximizing happiness, the overall balance of pleasure over pain’’. However, the weak spot is that it doesn’t worthy individual’s rights and only cares about what will benefit the majority of the people. This means that if one person (person A) had to be sacrificed to save three people ( B,C and D) then the utilitarian law says that A is sacrificed for B,C, and D because the happiness of three people overrules the aptness of only one person (person A). 2) Libertarianism a) There is a section in the book that states libertarianism as the right to do whatever we want with the things we own, provided we respect others people’s rights to do the same. This concept says that the government would only interfere with contracts, private property protection from theft, and keeping peace in society as written in the this chapter about the concept of libertarianism. Controversies such as gay marriage, abortion, recreational drugs, and prostitution would all be allowed.
